Smooth & Soulful Shows… and a Chance to Dance Like a Legend!

Paula Atherton & David Bach, The Funk Ark, Bobby Caldwell, The Michael Live Project, Carl's Rare Roast Beef Band, and Donnie at Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club, October 2015So much is happening at Bethesda Blues & Jazz this week – smooth jazz (Paula Atherton & David Bach), smooth soul (Bobbie Caldwell, Donnie), globe-trotting funk (The Funk Ark), and even a chance to learn to dance like Michael Jackson (The Michael Live Project)! Read on to find out more and get in on the fun!

Wednesday (10/14) Please welcome singer and saxophonist Paula Atherton and keyboardist David Bach! Paula Atherton has her smooth jazz and funky sounds out on a new label (Maurice White’s Kalimba Music), and there are some incredible contributors: one of the coolest guitarists around, Nick Colionne, trumpeter Cindy Bradley, and the wonderfully talented keyboardist Gail Jhonson. Jazz Journalist Jonathan Widran says, “You only have to watch a minute of David Bach’s slamming performance at the 2014 Silver Spring Festival on YouTube to realize he’s an explosive, funky player whose band… is on par with that of any top act on the contemporary jazz scene… I think Maryland’s best kept secret is out.” Don’t miss these talents – The show starts tonight at 8pm!

Thursday (10/15) get on The Funk Ark! DC native Will Rast (Antibalas) has been performing professionally since age 14, and it was his love of vintage funk and soul plus a range of instrumental jazz styles that sparked the group’s formation in 2007. It was Rast’s growing interest in the Afro Beat music of artists like Fela Anikulapo Kuti of Nigeria and Mahmoud Ahmed of Ethiopia, plus some legendary Salsa that shifted the Ark’s course toward polyrhythmic funk. Man is a Monster is their latest collection of songs. The genre-fusing groove starts at 8pm.

Friday (10/16) it’s Bobby Caldwell! From blue-eyed soul to pop, R&B, and standards, Caldwell’s live performances are always electrifying. He has been featured on The Tonight Show starring Jay Leno, The CBS Second Cup Café, BET Jazz Central, and he starred as Frank Sinatra in the David Cassidy/Don Reo theatrical production, The Rat Pack Is Back, in Las Vegas. Well known for his hit song, “What You Won’t Do For Love,” Bobby Caldwell is a longstanding favorite of critics as well as his many loyal fans. 8pm showtime.

Saturday (10/17) The #1 Michael Jackson tribute show in the world is returning to BBJ! This time, it’s even more exciting – It’s The Michael Live Project Master Dance Class, and you will have the opportunity to learn the legendary dance moves and choreography made famous by The King of Pop himself. The Michael Live Project is a great production built around the mesmerizing talent of New Jersey native Michael Clark. He is not an impersonator, but an interpreter of the great Michael Jackson. Also, don’t forget to mark your calendars for your chance to compete to perform with Michael Clark and the band during his Thriller Thursday concert on October 29. Get up and come out early as a dancer or spectator this Saturday! Dance class starts at 11am.

Saturday night, come party to the sounds of Carl’s Rare Roast Beef Band. It’ll be classic rock to the max – your favorite 70’s & 80’s hits by the likes of Booker T and the MG’s, Spencer Davis Band, CCR, The Rolling Stones, The Doobie Brothers, Eric Clapton, The Monkees, CSN&Y, Jackson Browne, The Police, Wilson Pickett,  Bad Company and many more. The party kicks off at 8pm.

Sunday (10/18) you will love the smooth style of modern day soul singer Donnie. Think India.Arie, Jill Scott, D’angelo, and Maxwell, and you’ve got the right musical universe in mind. Born in Lexington, Kentucky and raised in Atlanta, Donnie began directing the church choir at an early age. He soon expanded his musical horizons, beyond The Winans and Mahalia Jackson to soul/R&B masters such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Aretha Franklin. The singer’s anticipated full-length debut, The Colored Section, was released in November 2002 and picked up by Motown. Donnie’s latest project, The American Mythology, was released in Spring 2015. 8pm.

Upcoming shows – Daryl Davis Presents: An Evening with Deletta Gillespie, The Jam with Gary Grainger & Friends, Art Sherrod Jr, Tito Puente Jr, Maria Muldaur, Teedra Moses, and so many more.

Keeping great music alive here in Bethesda… Hope to see you here very soon.
