Music Heard Around the World: St. Patrick’s Day with O’Malley’s March, Band of Roses and Madz Johnson, and a Tribute to Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly

Band of Roses and Madz Johnson, St. Patrick's Day with O'Malley's March, We Are One Tribute X-Perience Band at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club, March 2017Wednesday (3/15) We’re excited to present this wonderful, woman-powered midweek double bill – Band of Roses and Madz Johnson! The Band of Roses are highly trained professionals with diversified musical backgrounds ranging from orchestral and musical theater to gospel, jazz, rock, funk and R&B. The sound is cultivated by smooth, yet powerful vocals paired with fierce and dynamic musicianship from some of the DMV area’s most gifted, skilled and talented female instrumentalists. The band and its members have performed locally and toured nationally and internationally with legendary musical talent including Patti LaBelle, Musiq Soulchild, Parliament Funkadelic’s  Original “Sir Nose,”  and Carolyn Malachi, to name a few. Madz Johnson is a Filipina-American singer, songwriter, arranger of her own music from Virginia. She considers herself a soul funk jazz artist and set out to introduce this unique kind of music to the Philippines as well as invade the US market with her talent. She holds three world tours under her belt as an esteemed Alumnus of the Chorus UPCC (University of the Philippines Concert Chorus). She released her first original song, “Smile,” in 2015. The concert starts at 8pm.

Friday (3/17) BBJ is the place to be on St. Patrick’s Day! Jared Denhard, Jim Eagan, Sean McComiskey, Pete Miller, Mac Walter, Jamie Wilson and Martin O’Malley are O’Malley’s March. You could call it Celtic Rock – but it is so much more. Leading the charge on vocals, guitar, bodhran and tin whistle, Martin O’Malley has brought together these six musicians – some born and raised in the traditions of Irish music, some classically trained, some lifelong students of blues, rock, and jazz. Many of them are all of the above-and all students of the experience that can only be gained by standing on stage and putting ones heart and soul into a performance, while making the audience feel that they are a part of the dynamic chemistry. Mixing the hauntingly beautiful, soulful and rousing music of Irish tradition with the music that was created out of the Irish Diaspora with original compositions by O’Malley and Denhard, they continue to grow, to listen, to go beyond what they know, and to share their intimate connection with the music they have learned, the music they have written, and the music that has written them. The music starts at 8pm.

Sunday (3/19) After two years of envisioning, We Are One Tribute X-Perience Band has become a reality! It has quickly become one of the most respected Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly tribute bands in the nation. We Are One Tribute X-Perience Band replicates the look, sound and feelings of the BET Lifetime Achievement Award recipient 70’s soul group. This eight-piece band, with each of its unique members, provides amazing chemistry. Led by nationally recording drummer ElWarren “Spoon” Weatherspoon and featuring lead vocalist Paul Bumbry, who has the amazing voice range and movement of his lifelong idol Frankie Beverly, the group highlights the early years of Maze and the transition to Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly. Get ready to hear the his songs you know and love including “Back in Stride,” “Too Many Games,” “Can’t Get Over You,” “Before I Let Go,” “Running Away,” and many more. The tribute begins at 7:30pm.
