Monday (5/23) Join the award-winning Walt Whitman High School Jazz Ensemble for an evening of music that is sure get your soul swingin’. They’ll be performing works you’ll love by Jazz greats including Clark Terry, Sammy Nestico, Dave Brubeck, Stevie Wonder, Gordon Goodwin, and Pat Metheny. Under the direction of Terry S. Alvey, the Whitman Jazz Ensemble has performed at NIH, the French Embassy, and Carnegie Hall. Between 1998 and 2011 the Whitman Jazz Ensemble captured first place titles at the prestigious Chantilly Jazz Festival eight times and was a finalist three times. Also two-time winners of the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, this ensemble performs with maturity beyond the students’ years. The concert begins at 7pm.
Tuesday (5/24) Come out and hear more great up-and-coming talent! The BCC Jazz Ensemble is part of the Grammy-award winning signature school music program of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. The jazz band participates in local and national competitions and most recently performed in Boston and at the mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival in Rockville. The BBC Jazz Ensemble performs of variety of styles including swing, Latin, rock, and ballads. The Ensemble will be joined by Paul Carr’s Jazz Academy of Music Orchestra. Over the past 12 years JAM has provided music education opportunities to over 2,000 kids. The Orchestra has performed at the Tri-C Jazz Festival in Cleveland with Javon Jackson, the National Jazz Education Network Conference in Atlanta with Brian Lynch, and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival with Delfeayo Marsalis. They are 3-time winners of the Silver Spring Jazz Festival High School Competition. The show begins at 7pm.
Wed (5/25) Don’t miss the next performance of Chris Grasso’s Vocal Workshop Showcase! The singers will be performing some great music at this special event, and the featured vocalists are Joan Yonkler, Jack Feder, Olga Naidenko, Krista Cowan, Don Dillingham and Nell Rumbaugh. They will be accompanied by Chris Grasso on piano, Romeir Mendez on bass, and David McDonald on drums. Your admission fee is good for either or both sets, so you are welcome to come early, enjoy dinner, and stay for both performances at 7pm and 9pm with no additional cover charge.
Friday (5/27) We’ve got an incredible evening in store… two performances by R&B singer/songwriter Eric Benét. The soulful crooner is the artist behind “You’re The Only One,” which spent 4 weeks straight at #1 on Urban AC radio and was nominated for a 2009 Grammy Award for Best R&B Male Performance, “Sometimes I Cry,” which reached # 1 on the Hot Adult R&B Songs Chart, plus fan favorites like “Chocolate Legs.” After the success in the US with his sixth album, The One, the four-time Grammy-nominated artist released his latest offering, entitled The Other One, exclusively for his international fan base. The Other One is an alternative approach to the 2012 album The One – a remixed version with Drum’n’Bass influences, ambient atmospherics, and sublime vocals. His latest single is “Sunshine.” Doors open at 5pm for the 7pm show and at 9:30pm for the 10pm show.
Sunday (5/29) It’s a Foxtrappe 70s Summer Soiree with Clones of Funk & DJ Julian! The historic nightclub Foxtrappe presents a very special evening of music from the 1970s to kick off the summer season! This party will take you back in the day with a live performance of classic tunes by Clones of Funk and classic dance music from the 70s by DJ Julian. The dance floor will be open for dancing all night. Dressing up is optional, but you might want to be ready for the Best 70s Attire Contest! Clones of Funk is a multi-talented ensemble of charismatic lead singers, a tight rhythm section, and dynamic horns playing funk anthems by Parliament-Funkadelic, James Brown, and Sly & the Family Stone. DJ Julian has been a premier DJ in the region for years at high profile events such as the Congressional Black Caucus and CIAA Tournament. He is also the featured DJ for the “Grown Folks Dance Party” on Magic 95.9 in Baltimore every Friday night. Get on up and get down Sunday night starting at 8pm!
