Larry Carlton, Lori Williams CD Release Party, The Shirelles + Leonard, Coleman & Blunt, Joe Clair and Friends, Joan Osborne Soul Revue at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club, November 2016Monday (11/7) Larry Carlton established himself from his first recording, A Little Help From My Friends. His studio credits include musicians and groups like Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, Sammy Davis Jr., Herb Alpert, Quincy Jones, Bobby Bland, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and literally dozens of others. He went on to perform with The Crusaders and then with the multi-platinum jazz super group, Fourplay. With 30 albums to his credit and having performed on over 100 albums that have gone Gold or Platinum, Larry Carlton has set a standard for artistry that spans three decades. Sting has described Carlton with this praise: “It must have taken more than one lifetime of music to produce Larry Carlton, he is the sum and son of a long lineage, beyond time, and beyond rational explanations of dedication or practice, the work of his hands speaks grace and passion and timeless knowledge. Listen, learn and be profoundly moved.” The concert begins at 7:30pm.

Thursday (11/10) Lori Williams, called a “dynamic presence” by JazzTimes and “the sought-after combination of soul and technical prowess that is reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald” by Muzikreviews.com, has a superb, melodic voice certain to “bring a tear of joy (or more) to your eye for sure” (Improvijazzation Nation). She believes in her motto: Words are powerful. Speak wisely. With that in mind, she has found her voice in the music she passionately shares. Lori’s third CD, Behind the Smiles, is a romantic collection, embodying a seamless mix of jazz, inspirational, and soul music. Grammy Award-winning artist and producer Terri Lynne Carrington says, “Lori… can seamlessly move from Jazz to R&B where the listener can feel at home with her in either genre.” Join us for this CD release concert as we celebrate Behind the Smiles. The concert starts at 8pm.

She has entertained audiences all over the DC area and around the country for decades with her fun, campy humor and great music, with period attire to match. She is the lead vocalist of The Fabulettes (rock ‘n’ roll and soul) as well as Honky Tonk Confidential (classic Country). Show host Daryl Davis graduated from Howard University with a degree in Jazz. He was mentored by legendary pianists Pinetop Perkins and Johnnie Johnson. He has worked with Elvis Presley’s Jordanaires, Chuck Berry, The Legendary Blues Band, Percy Sledge, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Coasters, The Platters, The Drifters, and many others. It’ll be a Dance Night with ½ off select bottles of wine and NO COVER (Only $10 minimum food or beverage). The show starts at 7:30pm. Come ready to party!

Tuesday (6/7) It’s Prince’s birthday! The loss of this great artist in April was tragic and a shock to fans around the world. Few artists have created a body of work as rich and varied as Prince Rogers Nelson. His music showed remarkable diversity, constantly experimenting with different sounds, textures and genres. Please join us in celebration of his life and music with a handful of the DMV’s finest musicians and special guest Mike Scott (Prince guitarist) as they cut through Prince’s hits and demonstrate just how powerful and versatile his compositions were and always will be. The tribute begins at 8pm.

Wednesday (6/8) Get in on The Mycah Chevalier Experience! Blessed with an irresistible and soulful voice, Mycah Chevalier is in a class all her own. She has shared the stage with artists such as El DeBarge, Regina Belle, Lyfe Jennings, The Whispers, Patti Labelle, Luther Vandross, JaRule, Arturo Sandoval, & Maysa Leak to name a few. She is lead female vocalist for the group guiltypleasures, who’s debut single “Anticipation (The Remix)” has been in steady rotation on WHUR 96.3FM’s Original Quiet Storm since April 2010, and has been deemed a “new classic” by many. In 2012, Mycah released her single and re-make of the Duke Ellington/John Coltrane jazz classic “In A Sentimental Mood.” Her recent single, “Genie,” has been played worldwide and landed Mycah’s 2nd Grammy consideration in 5 categories for the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. This phenomenal show starts at 8pm.

Thursday (6/9) Formed in 2008, Secret Society, the brainchild of Washington-area musician Bryan Mills, was created to bring the “live band” sound back to today’s heavily computerized music market. “The Society” is that breath of fresh air. The combination of talent, experience, and a host of influences stemming from the seeds of John Coltrane, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Police, Rick James, and others gives this band a great sound and identity all its own. To assign a genre-style to this group would be difficult considering the intermixture of music displayed. The group calls it “Feel Good Music,” and that is exactly what it is they have to offer. Bandleader and saxophonist Mills also performs with DC’s legendary Chuck Brown “The Godfather of Go-Go” Band. With Wayne Thomas on drums, vocalist Mike Madison, Robbie McDonald on lead guitar, bassist David Dyson, and Patrick Cooper on keyboards, this recipe of musicians is sure to please the taste buds of the avid music fan! Their feel-good show gets started at 8pm.

Friday (6/10) Best Bluegrass Album Grammy Award-Winners, The SteelDrivers, will treat us to a truly soulful, rootsy performance. Though their 2016 Grammy-winning album, The Muscle Shoals Recordings, may sound like something historic “from the vault,” it is fully from this moment. This fourth SteelDrivers studio album is made up of all-new material and recorded in Muscle Shoals at the legendary NuttHouse Recording Studio. Much of the inspiration came from Muscle Shoals, an area of exultation and experimentation, and home to the SteelDrivers’ lead vocalist, writer, and lead singer Gary Nichols. The group continues its rich musical progression, conjuring music drenched in soul, blues, bluegrass, R&B, country, and rock ‘n’ roll. Can a new album be a classic album? If the “blend of soul and slink, blues and country, mountain coal and red dirt,” as Peter Cooper characterized their sound, is timeless, then the SteelDrivers have delivered another new classic. As this band’s sound reaches deeper into musical roots, each new recording and live shoe is another spectacular step forward. The SteelDrivers concert begins at 8pm.

Saturday (6/11) It’s 76 Degrees West with special guest Sugar Bear! 76 Degrees West is the longitude for the East Coast in the Western Hemisphere – precisely, Washington, DC. This rising band has played behind numerous national acts such as Sax Man Jimmy Sommers, Grammy Award-Winner Gordon Chambers, Eric Darius, Allyson Williams, and Angela Johnson. The jazz/funk sound of 76 Degrees West has been lighting up stages across the U.S. since 2001. Back by popular demand! The show kicks off at 8pm.

Sunday (6/12) Shadz of Soul & Nu-Era brings the Sounds of The Emotions & The Temptations! Soulful and smooth, the female R&B group Shadz of Soul hails from the Washington, DC area. The group formed in the early 90’s and consists of Anissa Hargrove, Shawn Allen, and Farnetta Baker. The group is often compared to The Emotions, EnVogue, and The Jones Girls. Known for their intricate harmonies and limitless vocal ability, they have individually and collectively provided vocal assistance to artists including Patti Labelle, Chanté Moore, Mike Howard, Jean Carn, and Gloria Gaynor. Nu-Era consists of five singing brothers: Isaac “Ike,” Solomon “Sonny,” Samuel “Sam,” Jacob “Jake,” and Jeremy “JP” Marsh. They have performed with the Whispers, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, Blue Magic, Jerry Butler, The Orioles, Pookie Hudson and The Spaniels, along with other greats. They have opened for Gerald Levert, The O’Jays, and Patti LaBelle and have shared the stage with The Stylistics, The Delfonics and the Dramatics. This soulful performance starts at 8pm.

Coming Soon: Father’s Day with Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, Lisa Loeb, Be’la Dona, A Southern Soul Tribute, The Spinners, Jeff Bradshaw, and so much more. Visit our Music Calendar for tickets and info.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
