This monthly event gives YOU the chance to jam and sing with bassist Gary Grainger, drummer Greg Grainger, and their world-class musician friends. Wednesday (9/7) Join us as American Idol Finalist Elise Testone brings an all-star line-up to BBJ for Thankful For Amy: A Tribute to Amy Winehouse. The performance features songs from the Grammy Award-winning and multi-million selling Back To Black album, and Testone will also be performing her originals. Elise Testone is a powerhouse vocalist with incredible stage presence and vocal maturity, the perfect combination of soul, rock, attitude and restraint. Equally as impressive and at ease belting James Brown style vocals over a relentless funk groove as she is resting her voice gently over a ballad, Testone’s range of influences and vocal capacity know few limits. The band will include Natalie Cressman (trombone, Trey Anastasio Band), Jay Rodriguez (saxophone, Groove Collective), Clynt Yerkes (trumpet, Charles Bradley), Adam Fallen (guitar, Skylar Grey), Trey Cooper (keyboard), Jed Lingat (bass, Timothy Bloom), Sydney Driver (drums, Rhythm & Stealth), and Sami Stevens (vocals). Friday (9/9) Longtime fans have watched Rahsaan Patterson grow from the skinny, wide-eyed boy with the big eyes and bigger voice on the classic children’s show, Kids Incorporated, to one of the most influential yet underrated soul men on the planet. He’s sported blonde-streaked hair and cutting edge fashions while strolling through European-set music videos, and sung in clubs and concert halls around the globe. He’s worked with Brandy, Van Hunt, Ledisi, Lalah Hathaway, and others, and icons including Chaka Khan have ushered him into the hall of the greats. He’ll perform two great shows, at 7pm and 10pm.

Saturday (9/10) Our #1 Comedian, Host, and DC’s Finest will be back for more! Come out for a hilarious night – The Joe Clair & Friends Comedy Show will make sure you ROFL! This time, Joe’s featured comedians are Brooklyn Mike, Queen Aishah, & A. G. White. Joe Clair is a multifaceted entertainer with a career spanning two decades. Whether in comedy, hosting, or acting, he keeps a busy schedule. He first garnered millions of fans as host of BET’s Rap City in the mid-nineties. You know him now from the WPGC 95.5 Joe Clair Morning Show. So get ready, Bethesda! The laughs will be nonstop starting at 7pm and again at 10pm.

Sunday (9/11) Guitar One Magazine calls guitarist/vocalist Coco Montoya “the hottest southpaw in the blues” and raves about his “master touch and killer tone.” The Boston Globe succinctly states that Montoya’s music is “hot, blistering soul.” From his early days as a drummer with Albert Collins to his current status as one of the top-drawing guitarists and vocalists on the blues-rock scene, Montoya earned his status through years of hard work. When British blues icon John Mayall happened to catch Montoya at a jam session, he was blown away and recruited him as his guitarist in the legendary Bluesbreakers. Montoya spent the next 10 years in one of the most renowned blues bands in existence. The rest is history! His special guest for the evening will be the great Cathy Ponton King. The show starts at 8pm.

Feel the Beat! Virtuoso Drummer Cindy Blackman Santana, R&B Star Jon B,
plus Kandace Springs, Zo!, DC Fusion, & Comedy with Joe Clair

Kandace Springs w/ Lee Mo, Jon B, Zo! + Carmen Rodgers, Cindy Blackman Santana, Joe Clair & Friends, DC Fusion at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club, August 2016Tuesday (8/9) Kandace Springs and special guest Lee Mo will grace the BBJ stage! Kandace Springs is a Nashville-based singer, songwriter and pianist who counts such stylists as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack and Norah Jones as her heroes. As evidenced by her sparkling full-length Blue Note Records debut, Soul Eyes, Springs mimics none of them. The strength of her 2014 self-titled debut EP, led to TV performances on The Late Show With David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Lee Mo is one of the newer voices on the Philadelphia music scene, known for her killer vocals, soulful feel, and impressive music sensibilities. Born and raised in Baltimore, she is the musical product of many influences including gospel, jazz, and soul. This not-to-miss concert starts at 8pm.

Wednesday (8/10) Songwriter, producer, vocalist, and instrumentalist Jon B. brought a distinctive focus on smooth melodies to contemporary R&B. We are so excited to bring him to you live! Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and raised in Pasadena, California, Jon B. (short for Jonathan Buck) is the son of a professor of music and a concert pianist. Influenced by music found in his grandparents’ record store, he began combining the spirit of ’70s soul with hip-hop-inspired productions on his 1995 debut album, Bonafide. It peaked on Billboard’s R&B Albums chart at number 24, led by the Top Ten R&B single “Someone to Love,” a duet with prime influence Babyface, and went gold.  His second album, 1997’s Cool Relax, continued the emphasis on hip-hop soul and featured two of his biggest singles, “They Don’t Know” and the 2Pac-assisted “Are U Still Down.” Come out and enjoy dinner and a show – The music starts at 8pm.

Thursday (8/11) Multi-Instrumentalist and Producer Zo! is Detroit-area born and raised, Silver Spring, MD based Lorenzo Ferguson. Zo! utilizes multiple layers of thick instrumentation to shape his compositions, as demonstrated on his albums, ManMade and SunStorm. While touring his own material regularly, Zo! can also be seen on stage as the keyboardist and Musical Director for GRAMMY-nominated duo, The Foreign Exchange. In 2014, he completed music work for the Adult Swim animated series, Black Dynamite. Zo! is currently on tour in support of his newest offering, SkyBreak (2016). Special guest Carmen Rodgers writes and produces music with a sound all its own: deep soul, striking arrangements, and blunt but beautiful lyrics that places the challenging, mellow, somber, and exciting highs of life inside melody. Check out the show at 8pm.

Friday (8/12) Cindy Blackman Santana has been creating magnificent musical time and space since the beginning of her career as a busking street performer in New York City in the ’80s through her critically-acclaimed Another Lifetime (2010) and recently released an album and subsequent world tour with Spectrum Road, featuring Jack Bruce (Cream), John Medeski (Medeski, Martin & Wood) & Vernon Reid (Living Color). She is a virtuoso drummer whose artistry spans the realms of jazz and rock. She is a sound innovator with a passion for pushing creative boundaries and exploring movement and change, as known for the nuances and colors she brings to her beats and fills as she is for the sheer power of her soulful playing. Cindy has toured and recorded with artists including Pharoah Sanders, Cassandra Wilson, Joss Stone, Joe Henderson, and Angela Bofill.  From 1993 to 2007, she was the drummer in Lenny Kravitz’s band. While substituting for Dennis Chambers at a Santana show, Cindy and Carlos sparked a relationship, on and off the stage. They married in 2010. The Cindy Blackman Santana show starts at 8pm.

Featured comedians will be Marvin Dixon, Dawn Boatman, and Eddie Bryant. Joe Clair is a multifaceted entertainer with a career spanning two decades. Whether in comedy, hosting, or acting, this guy keeps a busy schedule. He first garnered millions of fans as host of BET’s Rap City in the mid-nineties. You know him now from the WPGC 95.5 Joe Clair Morning Show. Whether you call him Joe Cleezy, J.C., or Mr. Clair, you know Joe Clair is 100%! We’ve got two big shows in store at 7pm and 10pm. Seating begins at 5pm and again at 9:30pm.

Sunday (8/14) DC Fusion has quickly become one of the area’s most in-demand high-energy dance bands, and it’s easy to see why. The band is led by keyboard wizard Benjie Porecki and features dynamic vocalists Tiffany Simone and Uzorije Carter, vocalist/percussionist Marcus Turner, guitarist Randy Morser and saxophonist Phillip “Doc” Martin. End your weekend right with this live performance! The show kicks off at 7:30pm.

Tuesday (7/12) DC-area icon Johnny Castle is the bad boy every mother warned their daughters about and the teenage boy’s definition of cool. He is the bassist, vocalist, and bandleader of The Thrillbillys as well as a member of the famed blues band, The Nighthawks.  Over the last 40 years he has worked with top area bands including Bill Kirchen’s Too Much Fun, Switchblade, Tex Rubinowitz & The Bad Boys, and many others.  Well-versed in American Roots music, he has played Blues, Bluegrass, Honky Tonk, Swing, Texas Swing, Rockabilly, R&B, Rock ’n’ Roll, and Funk. Johnny was a recipient, along with his fellow Nighthawks, of the 2011 Blues Foundation award for acoustic CD of the year. Show host and piano master Daryl Davis graduated from Howard University with a degree in Jazz. He was mentored by legendary pianists Pinetop Perkins and Johnnie Johnson. He has worked with Elvis Presley’s Jordanaires, Chuck Berry, The Legendary Blues Band, Percy Sledge, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Coasters, The Platters, The Drifters, and many others. The show starts at 8pm.

Wednesday (7/13) Formed in 1994, the members of Suttle Thoughts have made a name for the band coast to coast over the last 23 years. They have performed in Dallas Texas, Miami, Florida, Cancun, Puerto Rico and all across the DMV. They’ve opened for national recording artists including The Isley Brothers at DAR Constitution Hall, and they’ve backed Jay Holiday, Anthony David and a host of others. Locally, they are regular performers at the annual H Street Festival and they were requested to perform at the historical Howard Theatre at a tribute for the legendary Godfather of Go-Go, Chuck Brown. The band has been playing at the Historical Takoma Station every Friday for the last ten years, the longest tenure for any Go-Go band at any area venue. In the beginning of 2016, “Suttle Thoughts” became “Suttle.” Look out for a new music release this summer! This show will get the party started at 8pm.

Thursday (7/14) Come one, come all, come check out the great Peter Erskine! Peter Erskine is one of the most recorded drummers in history. He has been performing professionally since the age of six and is the only drummer ever to play in the group Weather Report. The two-time Grammy winner has recorded with Steely Dan, Diana Krall, Randy & Michael Brecker, Kate Bush, Maynard Ferguson, Gordon Goodwin, Joe Henderson, Stan Kenton, Joni Mitchell, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Andrea Bocelli, Stanley Jordan, and Rod Stewart just to name a few. Dave Damiani & The No Vacancy Orchestra is in constant rotation on XM 71 Siriusly Sinatra and radio stations all over the country. This summer, they have been accompanying a series of amazing artists and making Thursdays swing at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club! Showtime is 8pm.

Friday (7/15) The core of the Chopteeth sound is Afrobeat: a big-band funk invented by Fela Kuti in 1970’s Nigeria. Afrobeat is a spicy stew of modern jazz, Yoruba tribal music and burning, James Brown-inspired rhythms. Chopteeth’s sets feature original compositions along with updates of African dance classics, all while remaining true to the spirit of the music and its message. Band members step to the mic to serve up lyrics in a total of seven different languages. Since 2007, the members of the Washington Area Music Association have selected Chopteeth for a total of fourteen Wammie Awards, including Artist of the Year, Debut CD of the Year, World Music CD (twice) and World Music Group (for the last eight years in a row).This 12-piece Afrofunk orchestra explores the common groove between the funkiest, most hip-shakin’ West African and American popular music on the planet. Catch the groove at 8pm.

Wednesday (6/15) North Carolina bred, Brooklyn based singer/composer/multi-instrumentalist Becca Stevens has received copious praise from the likes of The New York Times, describing her as “a best-kept secret” and “impressively absorbing.” Come out and see for yourself! Drawing upon elements of pop, indie-rock, jazz, and traditional Appalachian folk, Stevens has been hailed by the press, her peers and fans alike for her unique ability to craft exquisitely understated compositions. She’s fluent on guitar, ukulele, and charango, with pitch-perfect and inimitable vocals. Stevens has toured the world with her band and has collaborated with the likes of: Brad Mehldau, Esperanza Spalding, Snarky Puppy, David Crosby, Jacob Collier, Alan Hampton, and many others. Not to be missed! The Becca Stevens Band plays at 8pm.

Friday (6/17) Grammy-nominated Miki Howard has a stunning catalog of wide-ranging music to her credit – from the breezy “Come Share My Love” and the steamy funk of “Ain’t Nobody Like You” to her soul-stirring signature song, “Love Under New Management,” the jazzy “Imagination,” and the inferno that is “That’s What Love Is,” a duet with the late, great Gerald Levert. She’s got a lot happening right now – a new live and studio-recorded 5-song EP, Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blues, and a brand new movie about her life and career just out on TV One: Love Under New Management – The Miki Howard Story. This time around he’s got two big shows especially for Father’s Day Weekend, and the featured comedians are Ray Grady, Ashley Mayo, Kyle Grooms! #thefunnydontstop! Seating begins at 5pm for the 7pm show and at 9:30 for the 10pm show.

Sunday (6/19) Happy Father’s Day! Take a trip back in the day and celebrate Father’s Day with one of the great, soulful vocal groups, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes. Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes were formed by Melvin in Philadelphia in 1954. In 1960 under the Valley Vue label, they went onto record their first hit to reach the R&B charts with the single, “My Hero.” In 1970, it was the apparently unassuming addition of Teddy Pendergrass as their drummer that set off a series of pivotal events that led to the group’s jump into national prominence. They collaborated with producers/songwriters Leon Huff and Kenny Gamble and signed with their Philadelphia International label. With Pendergrass in his new role and Gamble & Huff s influence, Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes reeled off a series of hits including “If You Don t Know Me By Now” and “The Love I Lost” which reached No. 3 and No. 7 on the Billboard pop charts, respectively. Come enjoy the Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes of today – still going strong with all the hits and more. Doors open for Father’s Day Brunch at 10:30am for the 12:30 show. The once Texan, now New York-based quasi-collective has gone from the best-kept secret to one of the most respected names in instrumental music. Although still “underground” in many respects, the band earned its first Grammy Award in early 2014 (for Best R&B Performance) and has earned high praise from critical stalwarts like the BBC, The Village Voice, The Guardian, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, as well as the world’s most respected musicians from Pat Metheny to Prince. Snarky Puppy seamlessly fuses a deep knowledge and respect for musical tradition with sonic and conceptual innovation in a way that is able to reach the most critical or the most carefree audience. The band is a convergence of musicians from white and black America who also perform regularly with artists like Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Kirk Franklin, Justin Timberlake, Roy Hargrove, and Marcus Miller. Doors open at 5pm for the 7pm show, and again at 9:30 for the 10pm show.

Tuesday (5/3) Come out on Tuesday night for The Grainger Jam!  Musicians and singers, this is a great opportunity to share the stage with bassist Gary Grainger, drummer Greg Grainger, and their world-class musician friends. The Grainger Jam is where you want to be whether you want to rock out with the band or just have some great food and beverages while you enjoy the music. Hosted by Brandon Combs and Bryan Fox with friends Vince Evans and Benji Porecki. The Jam starts at 8pm.

Wednesday (5/4) Let’s get ready to rumble… It’s NRBQ vs. Los Straitjackets! Two of the greatest live bands in America join forces to bring you the rock & roll event of 2016. There is no Pay-Per-View, and this bout will go the distance. Attendance is mandatory, and everyone will win. The legendary NRBQ released their latest studio album, the critically-acclaimed Brass Tacks, in the summer of 2014. “NRBQ is still liable to play anything. Roaring rockabilly, transcendent pop-rock, roadhouse blues, avant jazz – you name it.” —Minneapolis Tribune. Los Straitjackets are the leading practitioners of the lost art of the guitar instrumental. Using the music of Ventures, The Shadows, Link Wray, and Dick Dale as a jumping off point, the band has taken their unique, high energy brand of original rock & roll around the world. Clad in their trademark Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling masks, the “Jackets” have delivered their trademark guitar licks to 16 albums, thousands of concerts, and dozens of films and TV shows. This great double bill concert starts at 8pm.

Thursday (5/5) We are pleased to welcome British singer-songwriter, rapper, producer, actor, and Grammy Award winner Estelle! In league with other contemporary British female singers like Amy Winehouse, Adele, and Duffy, Estelle is known for her eclectic mix of musical genres including R&B, soul, reggae, grime, hip-hop, pop, and dance. She has experienced significant mainstream success with the single “American Boy” feat. Kanye West, for her collaboration with David Guetta in “One Love” and also with songs like “1980,” “Free,” “Break My Heart (feat. Rick Ross),”  “Thank You,” and “Conqueror.” Other collaborations include John Legend, Robin Thicke, Chris Brown, and will.i.am. Since 2013, Estelle has voiced the character Garnet in the animated TV series, Steven Universe. The concert, with special guests Familiar Faces, begins at 8pm.

Friday (5/6) Come out and celebrate great songwriting and performance with Grin Again, a full-band tribute to Bethesda’s own Nils Lofgren’s legendary early 70’s band, Grin. Grin Again will perform the entire classic first album, Grin (“Like Rain,” “See What Love Can Do,” “18 Faced Lover”), along with 14 more best-of classics from the entire Grin catalogue including “White Lies,” “Moon Tears,” “Love Or Else,” “End Unkind,” “Beggars Day,” “You’re The Weight,” and more. Grin Again will let listeners experience the unforgettable songs Nils wrote for one of the early 70’s finest & most versatile bands. Showtime is 8pm.

Saturday (5/7) Bethesda loves Joe Clair & Friends! Our #1 Comedian/Host and DC’s Finest Joe Clair (WPGC 95.5 Joe Clair Morning Show) brings in the spring with what we love…a night of LMFAO! This time, it’s the Mother’s Day Weekend Edition – the I’ll Always Love My Momma Comedy Show! The other laugh-out-loud featured comedians will be Kareem Green, Hadiyah Robinson, and Omar Thompson. Tuesday (4/12) Join us for The Grainger Jam! If you’re a singer or musician, come out and jam with bassist Gary Grainger, drummer Greg Grainger, and their world-class musician friends. The Grainger Jam is a fantastic time whether you join the band or just enjoy the music. Hosted by Brandon Combs and Bryan Fox with friends Vince Evans and Benji Porecki. Start time is 8pm.

Wednesday (4/13) L A Young has performed professionally since the 1990s, and her vocals include blues, R&B, Motown, jazz, hip-hop, classic rock, alternative and Country. Dubbed Maryland’s Queen of Soul, she has appeared at the Maryland State Fair, numerous music festivals, the Hard Rock Café, performed for the Governor of Maryland and the Mayor of Baltimore. L A loves a good story in song and some say she has never met a ballad she didn’t love. Her voice has been described as Chaka Kahn meets Phyllis Hyman. As the new millennium approached, L A formed her own band–The Unusual Suspects. They’re celebrating their 15th anniversary, and you’re invited to the party! The band gets going at 8pm.

Thursday (4/14) If the Grammy Award winning band, Snarky Puppy, was a heart, drummer Robert “Sput” Searight and percussionist Nate Werth serve as its explosive pulse. World-renowned for their artistic communication through rhythm, this dynamic duo debuts their own project – Ghost Note! Come out and hear them expand their percussive voice into a night of melody through innovative grooves and captivating artistry. Robert “Sput” Searight is one of the most influential drummers and producers in modern music. Nate Werth, the undeniable secret weapon of Snarky Puppy, is both rooted in tradition and constantly innovating in the percussion world. Check out Ghost Note beginning at 8pm.

Friday (4/15) It’s time for the Golden State Lone Star Revue! Bandleader and Blues Award winner Mark Hummel started playing harmonica in 1970 and has gone on to become one of the premier blues harmonica players of his generation. He has been featured on over thirty recordings since 1985, including the Grammy nominated 2013 release Blind Pig recording, Remembering Little Walter. Other band members include Anson Funderburgh (Boz Scaggs, Jimmy Buffet), and guitar genius Little Charlie Baty. Don’t miss the opening act, former DC resident and local favorite funny man Rev. Billy C. Wirtz! Combining boogie woogie piano with tunes like “Big Bad Boy with Red Dress On,” “Mama Was a Deadhead,” and “Mennonite Surf Party,” he is one-of-a-kind. Showtime is 8pm.

Saturday (4/16) Get ready to eat, drink and laugh, Bethesda… Our #1 Comedian/Host and DC’s Finest Joe Clair (WPGC 95.5 Joe Clair Morning Show) is bringing in the spring with what we love…a night of LMFAO! This time, Joe Clair & Friends Present the April Fools Comedy Fest! Featured comedians are Howie Bell, Ms. Meme, & Damon Razier. There will be two big shows at 7pm and 10pm! Doors open at 5pm and 9:30pm.

Sunday (4/17) Brencore Entertainment presents A Tribute to the Music of Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass, and Stevie Wonder! The Brencore Allstars Band will play the tunes of three favorites from the world of Motown, R&B, and soul! Come out and enjoy the sweet sounds. The show starts at 7:30pm.

Bill Laurance released his debut album, FLINT, in 2014. It went straight to #1 in the iTunes Jazz Charts and received international critical acclaim. His second album, SWIFT, was released on GroundUP music in Spring 2015. He’s on tour now with his latest, AFTERSUN –  Dance and African percussion at their heart, the new tunes combine deep world grooves with Laurance’s signature genre-bending exploration. Classically trained, Bill has worked as a professional musician since he was 14, touring internationally as a pianist, keyboard player, composer, producer and arranger, recording and or performing with artists including: David Crosby, Morcheeba, Salif Keita, Bobby McFerrin, Susana Baca, Lalah Hathaway, Laura Mvula, Jacob Collier, Musiq Soul Child, Chris Potter, Lionel Loueke, Carlos Malta, Miss Dynamite and The Metropole Orchestra. Born into musical legacy, the offspring of musicians Donny Hathaway and Eulaulah Hathaway, Lalah Hathaway’s career was never really a question in her mind. Preparations for the release of Hathaway’s debut self-titled album were already firmly in motion during her final semester at Berklee College of Music, where the Chicago-native nurtured her multi-instrumental and songwriting talents. Revered by some of the greatest musicians of the last century, a myriad of collaborations and international performances signpost Hathaway’s 25-year success. A true bridge between masters of the jazz and soul traditions and new generations of popular music innovators, Lalah Hathaway has performed with greats such as Stevie Wonder, Anita Baker, Prince, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. One of the finest blues, jazz and R&B vocalists you’ll find anywhere, the singer/actress has performed for Michael Jackson, Patti Austin, Al Jarreau and others. She also serves as a university Performing Arts coach, teaching countless other artists how to work a stage. Come see Deletta Gillespie strut her own stuff and show us how it’s done! Tuesday (2/23) Calling all musicians and singers! Bring your voices and musical instruments out to The Jam! Gary Grainger & Friends, some of the nation’s most talented musicians, are ready to back you up on our stage. Get on the mic or just come out and enjoy some incredible music. The Jam gets going at 8pm.

Wednesday (2/24) Don’t miss NYC-based Red Eyed Sinatra! This instrumental power trio weaves through funk, rock, electronica, ambient, and improve and draws upon influences spanning Wayne Krantz, D’Angelo, Bill Frisell, Jimi Hendrix, Rush, Miles Davis, and Radiohead. You already know the band members from other popular endeavors. The band is guitarist Bob Lanzetti (seen with the Grammy-winning band Snarky Puppy, David Crosby, and Lalah Hathaway), bassist Steve Jenkins (seen with Vernon Reid, Screaming Headless Torsos, Cindy Blackman, and others) and drummer Devin Collins (seen with Elliot Moss, Felix Pastorius, and others). It would be easy to call the band a “supergroup” but it’s fueled by its own unique chemistry first and foremost. Also performing will be Beast from the East. The show begins at 8pm.

Friday (2/26) We’ve got two exciting performances by Rahsaan Patterson! Longtime fans have watched Rah grow from the skinny, wide-eyed boy with the big eyes and bigger voice on the classic children’s program, Kids Incorporated, to one of the most influential, yet underrated soul men on the planet. His performances in clubs and concert halls around the globe are powerful affairs where the artist and the songs bleeds out joy, pain, longing, despair, and ecstasy. There’s a veritable who’s who of talented folks Patterson has written and produced for and with (from pop diva Brandy to fellow under-sung MVP Van Hunt), and collaborated with (Ledisi, Lalah Hathaway).  Icons including Chaka Khan have sung his praises and ushered him into the hall of the greats. Doors open at 5pm for the 7pm concert, and at 9:30pm for the show beginning at 10pm.

Saturday (2/27) Don’t miss the next performance of The Vocal Workshop. The singers will be performing some great music, accompanied by Chris Grasso on piano, Zack Pride on bass; and David McDonald on drums. The Vocal Workshop is an eight-week program designed to guide aspiring vocalists in their journey towards becoming jazz singers. The Workshop offers high-quality instruction in the art of jazz singing, in a setting with other vocalists who share the same goals. For the $10 fee, you are welcome to stay for either or both sets, which begin at 12:30pm and 2:30pm.

Next up on Saturday night… our #1 Comedian/Host and one of DC’s finest, Joe Clair (WPGC 95.5, Joe Clair Morning Show)! Joe Clair and Friends will bring us the Oh So Cold Comedy Show – Expect a night of LMFAO!  The featured comedians will be Timmy Hall, Alex Scott, & Big Mac. You know what times it is! Sunday (2/28) It’s the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club 3rd Anniversary! You are invited to celebrate this auspicious day with us as we are entertained by, perhaps, the greatest of all jazz bands – The Duke Ellington Orchestra! Joining the orchestra will be the incredible vocalist, Sharón Clark. Duke Ellington, a native Washingtonian, gave American music its own sound for the first time, and is best remembered for the over 3000 songs that he composed including “It Don’t Mean a Thing if It Ain’t Got That Swing,” “Sophisticated Lady,” “Mood Indigo,” “Solitude,” “In a Mellotone,” and “Satin Doll.” Known as the originator of big band jazz, Ellington received 13 Grammy Awards, the Pulitzer Prize, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His legacy will endure, and his music comes all the more alive through the performances of The Duke Ellington Orchestra. Sharón Clark, another Washington, DC native, is an interpreter of song who has brought festival and concert audiences to their feet across the U.S. and Europe. Her most recent album, Do It Again, is a fantastic set of songbook standards.

Tuesday (1/12) Are you a musician and/or singer? Bring your voice and your musical instruments out to The Grainger Jam on Tuesday nights! Gary Grainger & Friends, some of the nation’s most talented musicians, are ready to back YOU up on the Bethesda Blues and Jazz stage! Wednesday (1/13) You are going to love The Foundation Band! This new outfit, founded just last year, brings together some of the DMV’s top vocalists and musicians. Pop, jazz, and rhythm & blues are a big blend in this band, and on any given night, you might hear the best tunes from their repertoire by artists like Adele, Stevie Wonder, Maroon 5, or Michael Jackson. Here’s the lineup: Rick Flanagan on keyboards, Mike “QueMonk” Tucker on bass, and David Queen (drums) and Brian “Smitty” Smith (percussion) keep the beat. Powerhouse vocals are handled by Anyana “The Songbird” Martin and KaBa Soulsinger. Take a midweek break and check them out! The show starts at 8pm.

Thursday (1/14) The Dirty Dozen Brass Band is on the road celebrating 35 years of great music, and they’re stopping at BBJ along the way! Trumpet player Gregory Davis likens the making of the legendary New Orleans band’s musical creations to stirring up a pot of gumbo, and on their latest, Twenty Dozen, you can hear the blend he’s talking about. It’s an upbeat effort that combines R&B, jazz, funk, Afro-Latino grooves, some Caribbean flavor, and even a Rihanna cover. Get into the mix and check them out! Showtime is 8pm.

Friday (1/15) Billboard Magazine said Mary Ann Redmond is “an exciting vocal talent… wowing club audiences as a completely formed stylist.” Recently, she got together with Paul Langosch (bassist with Tony Bennett for 20 years) and Jay Cooley to create the new jazz recording, Compared to What. The resulting combo is a powerful new force. Jazz Notes said, “When listeners discover it, they will fall in love with its scope, the talent aboard, and Mary Ann Redmond’s exquisite voice.” Hear them live right here at BBJ! Redmond, Langosch and Cooley begin at 8pm.

Saturday (1/16) Get ready, Bethesda! Comedian Joe Clair is back for two Big Shows! Joe Clair & Friends Present: Let Laughter Ring Comedy Bash, and that means we are all in for a night of LMFAO! You may know Joe as the one-time host of BET’s Rap City, or in his current gig as host of the WPGC 95.5 Joe Clair Morning Show. Either way, on Saturday night, you’ll know for sure that The Funny Don’t Stop! Hurry up for these tickets; they are going fast! Doors open at 5pm for the 7pm show, and at 9:30pm for the 10pm show.

Sunday (1/17) Bask with us in a classic revue of Doo-Wop, Motown, and The Sounds of Philadelphia! On the bill are The Winstons of “Color Him Father” fame, re-formed by trademark owner “Jumpin” Joe Phillips, former back up musician with Barry White, Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, and others. Also performing will be former Spinners lead singer Frank Washington. The Intruders will perform hits including “Cowboys To Girls” and “I’ll Always Love My Momma.” Top 40 singer and Baltimore native Kim Glaudé will light up the stage with energy and vibrant light sure to captivate the audience. The show begins at 8pm.

Chick, with his father, the late Chick Hall, Sr., owned and ran the Surf Club in Bladensburg, MD, which launched the careers of many world-famous country musicians from the Washington/Baltimore/Virginia area. The host of the show will be boogie-woogie master Daryl Davis, who was mentored by legendary pianists Pinetop Perkins and Johnnie Johnson. Aside from The Daryl Davis Band, he has worked with Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley’s Jordanaires, Chuck Berry, Percy Sledge, The Coasters, The Platters, The Drifters, and others. She’s played The Fillmore Jazz Festival in San Francisco and has toured through Italy, Switzerland, and France. Shayna’s critically acclaimed performance of her single ”Gone Under” for Grammy Award-winning band Snarky Puppy’s Family Dinner, Volume 1, was a game changer. She continues to record and perform with the band, and has expanded into projects that have landed appearances on the Billboard Dance Charts, Conan O’Brien, and the Carson Daly show. Rise is her latest recording. Also on the bill performing her own brand of “feel good folk music” will be singer Tamara Wellons, granddaughter of the legendary gospel group, The Pritchett Sisters. Showtime is at 8pm.

Friday (12/4) we’re got Leonard, Coleman & Blunt! Come out and enjoy the evening as the former lead singers of The Temptations, The Platters, and The Drifters ring in the holidays. Performers from these three legendary million-selling groups will celebrate the season with classic R&B sounds. Come out to the show and hear LCB perform your favorite Christmas classics along with over two dozen of the greatest hits of all time (“The Great Pretender,” “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, “Under the Boardwalk,” and many more). This will be an unforgettable concert event – a great chance to sing along with every tune while dancing the night away! The concert begins at 8pm.

Sunday (12/6) we have a wonderful holiday show for the whole family. Virginia Music Adventures‘ Annandale Jazz Ambassadors, Wakefield Jazz Workshop, and Chapel Square Combo present A Big Band Christmas. This is a great opportunity to celebrate the holidays with tomorrow’s stars. They’ll play an array of classic big band hits that are just perfect for the season. This year’s show features the music of Glenn Miller, Johnny Marks, Irving Berlin, Sammy Cahn, Julie Styne, and more. Now in its 12th year, the Virginia Music Adventures Annual Holiday Show has become a well-loved area tradition. This special event begins at 1:30pm.

Sunday evening, we welcome The Chris Grasso Trio back to our stage. Chris Grasso is a Washington, D.C.-based jazz pianist who specializes in working with stellar vocalists. This time around, Chris will feature Sharón Clark and Paul Carr. Washington, D.C. standout Sharón Clark has garnered raves from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. She has won numerous awards including taking first place in The Billie Holiday Vocal Competition, which offers a featured appearance with the Baltimore Symphony. Her most recent release, Do it Again — My Tribute to Shirley Horn, is on its third printing. Paul Carr, a 1985 Howard University graduate, has dedicated his professional career to mastering the saxophone and the art of jazz. He grew up in inner-city Houston, Texas and was a member of the Kashmere High School Stage Band, whose director, the late Conrad Johnson, is the subject of a documentary, Thunder Soul, produced by actor, Jamie Foxx.  He carries on the Texas tenor tradition espoused by fellow Houstonians Arnett Cobb and Don Wilkerson. Chris Grasso has performed live on WPFW with jazz greats Keter Betts and Buck Hill. He also has appeared with the Ken Peplowski/Chuck Redd Quartet, guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli, Matt Wilson, and with New Orleans’ historic jazz family, the Jordans. The show begins at 7:30pm.
