Sunday (7/10) A Classic Rock institution will take the stage at BBJ – The Yardbirds are more than a mere rock band. In the brief period from 1963 to 1968, the group made an indelible mark on the “Shapes of Things” to come. To the casual music fan, The Yardbirds are best known as the band that honed the skills of future “guitar gods” Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page; and for their slew of chart hits, including “For Your Love,” “Heart Full of Soul,”  “I’m A Man,” and “Over Under Sideways Down.” Led by core members and songwriters Jim McCarty (drums), Chris Dreja (rhythm guitar/bass) and the late Keith Relf (vocals/harmonica), the band’s experimental explorations also provided the crucial link between British R&B, Psychedelic Rock, and Heavy Metal, while pioneering the use of innovations like fuzz tone, feedback and distortion. Reuniting decades later, McCarty and Dreja brought The Yardbirds boldly into the 21st Century with the 2003 release of the acclaimed CD, Birdland. In 2015, Jim McCarty debuted the new touring lineup of The Yardbirds with guitarist Johnny A, bassist Kenny Aaronson,singer/harpist/percussionist Myke Scavone, and guitarist/singer John Idanto. In 1983, the group joined forces with then-new production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who went on to craft a string of R&B hits for the group, which included “Just Be Good to Me,” “High Hopes,” “Tell Me If You Still Care,” “Borrowed Love,” “No One’s Gonna Love You,” “Just the Way You Like It,” and “The Finest.” The S.O.S. Sunday (5/15) The unforgettable falsetto voice of Eddie Holman and the tune that he popularized is perhaps the most recognizable urban love song in much of the English-speaking world.  “Hey There Lonely Girl” is a beautiful tune that seems to touch every soul as it emanates from airwaves or churns from the turntables of fans. Other classics by Eddie Holman include “This Can’t Be True,” “All In The Game,” and “You Make My Life Complete.” DC’s Finest (aka “The Doo-Wop Cops”), are former Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Officers who have gone from walking the beats to keeping the beat. This acapella group has entertained Presidents and has performed side-by-side with stars including Chuck Berry, The Dells, and The Drifters. Their repertoire includes classics such as “Come and Go With Me,” “Stormy Weather,” and “Island of Love.” This Sunday evening show starts at 7:30pm.

Snarky Puppy, The Grainger Jam, NRBQ vs. Los Straitjackets, Estelle, Newmyer Flyer Presents Grin Again!. Joe Clair and Friends, Mother’s Day Brunch with The Rat Pack at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club, May 2016Monday (5/2) We’ve got two great shows by the one-and-only Snarky Puppy! The once Texan, now New York-based quasi-collective has gone from the best-kept secret to one of the most respected names in instrumental music. Although still “underground” in many respects, the band earned its first Grammy Award in early 2014 (for Best R&B Performance) and has earned high praise from critical stalwarts like the BBC, The Village Voice, The Guardian, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, as well as the world’s most respected musicians from Pat Metheny to Prince. Snarky Puppy seamlessly fuses a deep knowledge and respect for musical tradition with sonic and conceptual innovation in a way that is able to reach the most critical or the most carefree audience. The band is a convergence of musicians from white and black America who also perform regularly with artists like Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Kirk Franklin, Justin Timberlake, Roy Hargrove, and Marcus Miller. Doors open at 5pm for the 7pm show, and again at 9:30 for the 10pm show.

Attendance is mandatory, and everyone will win. The legendary NRBQ released their latest studio album, the critically-acclaimed Brass Tacks, in the summer of 2014. “NRBQ is still liable to play anything. Roaring rockabilly, transcendent pop-rock, roadhouse blues, avant jazz – you name it.” —Minneapolis Tribune. Los Straitjackets are the leading practitioners of the lost art of the guitar instrumental. Using the music of Ventures, The Shadows, Link Wray, and Dick Dale as a jumping off point, the band has taken their unique, high energy brand of original rock & roll around the world. Clad in their trademark Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling masks, the “Jackets” have delivered their trademark guitar licks to 16 albums, thousands of concerts, and dozens of films and TV shows. This great double bill concert starts at 8pm.

Thursday (5/5) We are pleased to welcome British singer-songwriter, rapper, producer, actor, and Grammy Award winner Estelle! In league with other contemporary British female singers like Amy Winehouse, Adele, and Duffy, Estelle is known for her eclectic mix of musical genres including R&B, soul, reggae, grime, hip-hop, pop, and dance. She has experienced significant mainstream success with the single “American Boy” feat. Kanye West, for her collaboration with David Guetta in “One Love” and also with songs like “1980,” “Free,” “Break My Heart (feat. Rick Ross),”  “Thank You,” and “Conqueror.” Other collaborations include John Legend, Robin Thicke, Chris Brown, and will.i.am. Since 2013, Estelle has voiced the character Garnet in the animated TV series, Steven Universe. The concert, with special guests Familiar Faces, begins at 8pm.

Friday (5/6) Come out and celebrate great songwriting and performance with Grin Again, a full-band tribute to Bethesda’s own Nils Lofgren’s legendary early 70’s band, Grin. Wednesday (4/20) DC jazz piano favorite Dwayne Adell will perform! Adell is a recognized figure in the District jazz underground, having played on Quincy Jones’ album, Handel’s Messiah: A Soulful Celebration, and with Lauryn Hill in Chicago. Adell has performed at Blues Alley as well as at iconic Washington club, Bohemian Caverns. Musicians, journalists and fans have been astounded by this artist’s talent for years. Music critic Jerome Wilson wrote of his play during the 2014 Capitol Bop DC Jazz Loft Series, “Adell plays with astonishing speed and dexterity in a style that combines stride bass, classical ornamentation and gravity coming off like some mad cross between Art Tatum and McCoy Tyner…The man’s playing was scary.” The concert starts at 8pm.

Friday (4/22) Celebrating 40 years & more than eighteen million albums, Larry Blackmon and Cameo are still larger-than-life in the music industry! Blackmon has blazed trails since his first album release in 1977. He is a music stylist legend, an innovator whose influence on R&B and Urban Music is indisputable. As founder and front man of the R&B funk band, Cameo, Blackmon has lead his group on this journey with a long line of hit recordings including “Word Up,” “Single Life,” and “Candy.” Cameo’s unique signature sound has been copied, imitated, sampled, covered, reproduced, and replayed. Cameo songs today are routinely placed in films, TV, video games, and commercials. Best of all, though, is the live experience! Cameo will perform two great shows for us at BBJ at 7pm and 10pm.

Saturday (4/23) Former Back Door Slam frontman Davy Knowles is on tour in support of his latest studio album, The Outsider, and we’re thrilled he’s making a stop for us right here in Bethesda! Also on the bill are roots rockers Goin’ Goin’ Gone. Knowles’ musical journey began as he grew up in the Isle of Man, learning to play guitar from listening to the likes of Gallagher, Clapton, Knopfler, Green, and Mayall in his father’s record collection. At age 19, he arrived in the US with his band Back Door Slam to the sound of rave reviews. In 2014, he served as Ambassador for the Isle of Man’s “Year of Culture.” Come out and hear some of his new and familiar tunes. The music starts at 8pm.

Sunday (4/24) The Chris Grasso Trio continues its Sunday Spotlight series, welcoming two special guest artists: vocalist Vuyo Sotashe and saxophonist and flautist Lyle Link. Young South African jazz vocalist Vuyo (Vuyolwethu) Sotashe is making his mark across the globe, most recently capturing Third Place in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Vocal competition, where he was the first male vocalist ever to reach the final round. Vuyo moved to New York City in 2013 after being awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to pursue a Masters of Music at William Paterson University. Since then, he has gone on to win first prize at the very first Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival Vocal Competition in 2014 and performed on the festival’s main stage in February of 2015. More recently, he won the Audience prize award and placed second over-all at the 2015 Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition in Switzerland. Lyle Link is DC-area native who now calls San Francisco home. A versatile musician and sought after sideman, he performs in many musical styles from jazz, blues and R&B to Latin and world beat. He has played with artists Patti Austin, Christian McBride, Larry Willis, George Duke, Curtis Lundy and Ralph Peterson, to name a few. He has also performed with pop icons Patti Labelle, James Ingram, Isaac Hayes, Aretha Franklin, and has jammed with Prince. He has shared his musical gifts in festivals and concerts in Asia, the Middle East, the Caribbean, Europe, South America, and throughout North America. Rounding out the Chris Grasso Trio will be Zack Pride on bass and Ele Rubenstein on drums. This afternoon performance begins at 1pm.

Sunday evening, legendary rocker Terry Reid will grace the stage, with Cosmic American Derelicts. Terry Reid, aka “Superlungs,” is without doubt one of the greatest rock/soul voices to ever come along. A Terry Reid concert should be a cherished memory for any fan of the greats of British music. The legend is of turning down the front man’s job with Led Zeppelin, recommending his mate Robert Plant instead, and a similar offer and rebuff to Deep Purple. Aretha Franklin stated that The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Terry Reid were the best England had to offer in 1968. The legend continues with two world tours opening for The Rolling Stones, US tours with Cream, UK tours with Jethro Tull and Fleetwood Mac, The Isle of White Festival in 1969 and Glastonbury in 1970, and playing at Mick Jagger’s wedding. Then there were the soured record deals and leaving Britain for America nearly 40 years ago. Despite career setbacks and hiatus, Reid is performing at full force – He returned to Glastonbury in 2009. In 2012, Reid returned to the Isle of Wight Festival for the first time since 1971 and toured the UK in 2013 and 2014. With the recent re-mastering and re-release of the albums The River, Rogue Waves, and Seed of Memory, a new generation of fans, and collaborations with Johnny Depp and Joe Perry (Aerosmith), it’s clear that there is an undeniable resurgence in recognition for this outstanding vocalist and songwriter. 2016 looks set to be another successful year! The concert will begin at 8pm.

Check our Music Calendar for more upcoming concerts, comedy, and special events. We look forward to seeing you at the club very soon.
