Kandace Springs w/ Lee Mo, Jon B, Zo! + Carmen Rodgers, Cindy Blackman Santana, Joe Clair & Friends, DC Fusion at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club, August 2016Tuesday (8/9) Kandace Springs and special guest Lee Mo will grace the BBJ stage! Kandace Springs is a Nashville-based singer, songwriter and pianist who counts such stylists as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack and Norah Jones as her heroes. As evidenced by her sparkling full-length Blue Note Records debut, Soul Eyes, Springs mimics none of them. The strength of her 2014 self-titled debut EP, led to TV performances on The Late Show With David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Lee Mo is one of the newer voices on the Philadelphia music scene, known for her killer vocals, soulful feel, and impressive music sensibilities. Born and raised in Baltimore, she is the musical product of many influences including gospel, jazz, and soul. This not-to-miss concert starts at 8pm.

Wednesday (8/10) Songwriter, producer, vocalist, and instrumentalist Jon B. brought a distinctive focus on smooth melodies to contemporary R&B. We are so excited to bring him to you live! Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and raised in Pasadena, California, Jon B. (short for Jonathan Buck) is the son of a professor of music and a concert pianist. Influenced by music found in his grandparents’ record store, he began combining the spirit of ’70s soul with hip-hop-inspired productions on his 1995 debut album, Bonafide. It peaked on Billboard’s R&B Albums chart at number 24, led by the Top Ten R&B single “Someone to Love,” a duet with prime influence Babyface, and went gold.  His second album, 1997’s Cool Relax, continued the emphasis on hip-hop soul and featured two of his biggest singles, “They Don’t Know” and the 2Pac-assisted “Are U Still Down.” Come out and enjoy dinner and a show – The music starts at 8pm.

Thursday (8/11) Multi-Instrumentalist and Producer Zo! is Detroit-area born and raised, Silver Spring, MD based Lorenzo Ferguson. Zo! utilizes multiple layers of thick instrumentation to shape his compositions, as demonstrated on his albums, ManMade and SunStorm. While touring his own material regularly, Zo! can also be seen on stage as the keyboardist and Musical Director for GRAMMY-nominated duo, The Foreign Exchange. In 2014, he completed music work for the Adult Swim animated series, Black Dynamite. Zo! is currently on tour in support of his newest offering, SkyBreak (2016). Special guest Carmen Rodgers writes and produces music with a sound all its own: deep soul, striking arrangements, and blunt but beautiful lyrics that places the challenging, mellow, somber, and exciting highs of life inside melody. Check out the show at 8pm.

Friday (8/12) Cindy Blackman Santana has been creating magnificent musical time and space since the beginning of her career as a busking street performer in New York City in the ’80s through her critically-acclaimed Another Lifetime (2010) and recently released an album and subsequent world tour with Spectrum Road, featuring Jack Bruce (Cream), John Medeski (Medeski, Martin & Wood) & Vernon Reid (Living Color). She is a virtuoso drummer whose artistry spans the realms of jazz and rock. She is a sound innovator with a passion for pushing creative boundaries and exploring movement and change, as known for the nuances and colors she brings to her beats and fills as she is for the sheer power of her soulful playing. Cindy has toured and recorded with artists including Pharoah Sanders, Cassandra Wilson, Joss Stone, Joe Henderson, and Angela Bofill.  From 1993 to 2007, she was the drummer in Lenny Kravitz’s band. While substituting for Dennis Chambers at a Santana show, Cindy and Carlos sparked a relationship, on and off the stage. They married in 2010. The Cindy Blackman Santana show starts at 8pm.
