Monday (10/24) Don’t miss The Vocal Workshop Showcase! The Vocal Workshop is an eight-week program designed to guide aspiring vocalists in their journey towards becoming jazz singers. The Workshop offers high-quality instruction in the art of jazz singing, in a setting with other vocalists who share the same goals. This time, the singers will be performing some great music, accompanied by Chris Grasso on piano, Zack Pride on bass, and Lenny Robinson on drums. Tickets are good for either or both sets, so come to the early show and stay for no additional cover charge. The performances are at 7pm and 9pm.
Thursday (10/27) Come out and see Anissa Hargrove, a native Washingtonian who was “born to perform.” Over the years, she has performed background vocals with legendary R&B artists including Patty LaBelle, Chanté Moore, Miki Howard, Shirley Jones, and a host of others. She is a recent recipient of the 2016 Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) for Best Urban Adult Contemporary Recording. Her current single, “Crazy,” is in rotation on her hometown radio station, WHUR 96.3 FM — the country’s largest Adult Contemporary station – as well as on Sirius XM Heart and Soul, Music Choice, and other stations worldwide. These days, when not performing her own music, Anissa is on the road singing backup with the multi-Grammy winner and legendary Queen-of-Disco, Gloria Gaynor, who will join her onstage for a special guest appearance! The concert starts at 8pm.
Friday (10/28) The music of Tina Turner is world renowned! Saturday – Sunday (10/29 – 10/30) Shortly before the release of Cécile McLorin Salvant‘s debut Mack Avenue album, WomanChild, critic Ben Ratliff made a bold prediction in the pages of The New York Times. McLorin Salvant, he claimed, “is still mostly unknown to jazz audiences,” then added: “though not for much longer.” McLorin Salvant has more than validated that forecast. The last 24 months have been a whirlwind of success and acclaim for the young vocalist, who first came to the attention of jazz fans with her triumph at the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. WomanChild went on to earn a bevy of honors, including a Grammy nomination and selection as Jazz Album Of The Year by the DownBeat International Critics Poll. That magazine also honored McLorin Salvant in three other categories including Best Female Jazz Vocalist. A few months later, the Jazz Journalists Association selected McLorin Salvant as Up-and-Coming Jazz Artist Of The Year and as Top Female Vocalist. We’ve got two great chances for you to see her perform – Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 7:30pm.
Coming up: We’ve got The Freaks Come Out at Night Halloween Party with Clones of Funk!
