Tuesday (1/24) Denny Laine, who co-founded Wings with Paul and Linda McCartney, celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Wings Over America tour with a live performance that inspires just as the original tour did in 1976. After the success of Wings’ greatest album, Band on the Run, the stage was set for Wings to invade America just as Paul had with the Beatles and Denny had with the Moody Blues more than a decade before. The Wings Over America tour visited The Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland on May 15th and 16th, 1976. From the tour came the film, Rock Show, and the number one triple album set, Wings Over America. At this show, expect to hear favorites including “Live and Let Die,” “Say You Don’t Mind,” “Jet,” “Go Now,” “Time to Hide,” “Band On The Run,” “Picasso’s Last Words,” “Venus and Mars/Rock Show,” “Spirits of Ancient Egypt,” “Richard Cory” and more. You won’t want to miss this rock legend! The rock show starts at 8pm.
Wednesday (1/25) Hailing from the DC Metro area, guiltypleasures captivates listeners with a mix of infectious grooves, provocative lyrics, and seductive vocals. They are best known for the WHUR-FM Quiet Storm classic, “Anticipation (The Remix).” guiltypleasures bears a soulful sound reminiscent of Eric Benét, Incognito, and Brand New Heavies. Both their 2009 debut album, lovestories, and their 2015 sophomore release, cautionarytales, received critical acclaim on SoulTracks.com, resulting in multiple Soul Tracks Readers’ Choice Awards and Washington Area Music Association Award nominations. guiltypleasures recently opened for national recording artist Joe at WHUR’s Pre-Winter Soul Concert. Thursday (1/26) Comedian, actor, and writer Joey Vega was born in New York City and in addition to comedy, has used his acting skills in feature films and television. Joey has written stand-up material for Chris Rock, and was a staff writer for George Lopez’ late night talk show, Lopez Tonight. As an actor he has appeared alongside Tom Hanks, Sally Field, Ed Norton, John Tuturro, Matt Damon, and many others. Some of his TV credits include HBO’s documentary, Good Hair, as well as writing for such movies as I Think I Love My Wife, Death At A Funeral, Grown Ups, and Grown Ups 2. Joey Vega was also the first Latino to host his own nationally-syndicated variety show, The Latin Connection. Performing stand-up is Joey Vega’s first love and he has been opening for his longtime friend Marc Anthony since 1999. The laughter starts at 8pm!
Friday (1/27) The band that toured the world with the Godfather of Go-Go carries the torch and keeps the beat alive. The Chuck Brown Band continues to keep the legacy alive by performing all your Chuck Brown and go-go favorites, and by creating new music and bringing on board new fans and followers. With three new songs on the final Chuck Brown album, Beautiful Life, a new single, “Show Me Love,” and rave reviews from longtime fans and new fans, The Chuck Brown Band is dedicated to the heartbeat of the DMV: go-go. With the addition of Frank Sirius on guitar and vocals, the rest of the band is intact, including Chuck’s daughter KK, The Horny Horns, Kenny “Kwickfoot” Gross, Mighty Moe Hagans, Karlston “Ice” Ross, Sweet Cherie Agurs, and Marcus Young.com. Every show still starts with “Wind Me Up Chuck,” and doesn’t stop until the dance floor is empty. Sho Yo’ Right! The band starts crankin’ at 8pm.
Saturday (1/28) Please join us as Daryl Davis presents our 2nd Annual Thanks for the Memories Tribute Show honoring the great artists we lost in 2016. There were 77 deaths of musicians in 2016, including some of our own local musicians. We will acknowledge and honor each and every musician, by either reading their name aloud or performing a song or songs for them. Some of the honorees for whom we will perform songs include Prince, David Bowie, Merle Haggard, Maurice White, Patty Duke, Glenn Frey, Paul Kantner, Bobby Vee, Holly Dunn, Leonard Cohen, Leon Russell, Ralph Stanley, Buckwheat Zydeco, Charmian Carr, Marni Nixon, Vanity, Otis Clay, Billy Paul, Mose Allison, Debbie Reynolds and others. The great players on our stage for the evening will be Keith Grimes on guitar, Dan Quinn on keys, Wes Crawford on drums, Doug Ross on bass, and Seth Kibel on sax, flute, and clarinet with DMV favorites Tommy Lepson, Tom Principato, Deletta Gillespie, Angela Hill, Patsy Stephens, Hayley Fahey, Liz Springer and more. The stars will be out on Saturday, January 28th, and the tribute begins at 8pm.
Sunday (1/29) Jazz saxophonist Art Sherrod, Jr. is “…a man who loves music, a man who loves art, respects the spirit world and thinks with his heart.” Influenced by the likes of David Sanborn, Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright, Kim Waters and other notables, he gained an appreciation for strong melodies, grooves, tone and soulful expressiveness. In 2005, Art released his freshman project, All 4 Love, which features an incredible arrangement of the Hall and Oates mega hit, “Sara Smile.” CeCe Peniston is one of the most successful dance club artists in the history of the US Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play Charts. Her signature dance hit, “Finally,” was #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and #2 on the UK Top 75, selling millions of copies worldwide. This concert starts at 7:30pm.
