Friday (10/14) What Time Is It? Time for two amazing performances by Morris Day & The Time! Born in Minneapolis, Morris Day went to school with Prince Rogers Nelson and sang in Prince’s first band, Grand Central. The Time was originally created as Prince’s alter-ego to be seen as the cool, street-wise funk band contrasting Prince’s more soulful, R&B sound. International fame came along when Morris Day and The Time were cast in Purple Rain, which captured the exploding Minneapolis music scene at its peak. The group first burst onto the public scene with the self-titled album, The Time, which included “Get It Up,” “Cool,” and “Girl.” They went on to record three more albums, including What Time Is It? (featuring the hits “777-9311,” “Wild and Loose,” “Walk,” and “Gigolos Get Lonely Too”) and Ice Cream Castle, (which included the hit “Jungle Love”). After three albums, Morris Day launched his solo career, releasing The Color of Success, Daydreaming, and Guaranteed. Morris Day & The Time are back on the road with a great live show in store! They start at 7pm and 10pm.
Sunday (10/16) We are pleased to present Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band plus JaneliaSoul! Chopteeth is a 12-piece Afrofunk orchestra exploring the common groove between the funkiest, most hip-shakin’ West African and American popular music on the planet. The core of the group’s sound is Afrobeat: a big-band funk invented by Fela Kuti in 1970’s Nigeria. Afrobeat is a spicy stew of modern jazz, Yoruba tribal music and burning, James Brown-inspired rhythms. The Washington Post says,” A storming powerhouse of big-band African funk, Chopteeth is smart, tight and relentlessly driving: a definite don’t-miss.” Sharing the stage will be Nigerian-American singer-songwriter JaneliaSoul, who charms listeners with her soulful take on the reggae and world genres, echoing artists as diverse as Sade, Etta James, and Ziggy Marley. Back in West Africa, JaneliaSoul boasts a collection of popular hits in the afro-pop genre, including “Sexy Nana” and “Love Song in Yoruba.” She is now on a quest to take over the USA with her latest single “Love-Hate.” The music starts at 7:30pm.
